Carl Sandburg Elementary School hosted a tree planting ceremony for the City of Joliet's Arbor Day Celebration on April 26, 2024. Joliet City Councilwoman Sherri Reardon, District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, and members of the Tree Advisory Board joined Sandburg Principal Dr. Shawn Olson at the event. Second Grade students recited a poem and student winners of the Arbor Day Poster contest were recognized. Seedling trees were distributed to students in Kindergarten, first, and second grades to encourage planting at their homes to beautify our community.

The winners of the Arbor Day Poster Contest were second grade students Alora Calderon (first place), Olga Oslin (second place), Selena Salgado (third place), and Cayden Greene received honorable mention. The students were also recognized at the Joliet City Council Meeting in April. The City of Joliet was recently recognized as a "Tree City USA" for the 33rd consecutive year by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
