District 86 Students Advance to Science Regionals

Washington Student Rocco Jones earned a perfect score.

Congratulations to the junior high students who recently competed in the Joliet Public Schools District 86 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Extravaganza. Eighth-grade student Rocco Jones from Washington Academy received a perfect score and a Double Gold Medal for his “Electrified Waters: How Conductivity Can Reverse Ocean Acidification” project.

In addition, the following seventh and eighth grade students received gold medals at the event: Shaila Aguirre, Gompers Junior High; Michelle Arteaga, Gompers Junior High; Yareli Cervantes, Gompers Junior High; Fernanda Chavez, Gompers Junior High; Victoria Choncoa, Gompers Junior High; Maria Cisneros Zamudio, Gompers Junior High; Rosita Cortez Ramos, Gompers Junior High; Antonio Diaz, Gompers Junior High; Zoe Diaz Paredes, Gompers Junior High; Helen Diaz Serna, Gompers Junior High; Tyree Dickson, Dirksen Junior High; Dilan Flores Serrano, Gompers Junior High; Estefany Lara Rojas, Gompers Junior High; Richard Medina Acosta, Gompers Junior High; Dulce Medina Galvan, Gompers Junior High; Sofia Morataya Mencos, Gompers Junior High; Daniel Ortiz Petrel, Gompers Junior High; Alejandro Perez, Dirksen Junior High; Genesis Reyes, Gompers Junior High; Reyna Rivera, Gompers Junior High; Nicole Rojas, Gompers Junior High; Bryana Sanchez, Gompers Junior High; Cynthia Sanchez Perez, Gompers Junior High; Kennedy Smith, Dirksen Junior High; and Anabelle Zepeda, Gompers Junior High.

These students, along with Rocco Jones, will participate in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) Region 9 Science Fair Exposition at North Central College in Naperville on March 16, 2024.

“The students had amazing presentations at the event,” said Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, “I think we have several future scientists and engineers in our school district.”
