Over 60 Joliet Public Schools District 86 elementary students participated in the Kids ‘n Nature Summer Camp Program at Pilcher Park and the Bird Haven Greenhouse this summer. Third- and fourth-grade students from T.E. Culbertson, M.J. Cunningham, Edna Keith, Isaac Singleton, and Woodland Elementary Schools attended the five-week program. The students and staff traveled to Pilcher Park twice a week for the sessions. The program continues year-round at these schools during the school year.

In addition to exploring and studying animal habitats at Pilcher Park and Hickory Creek, the students focused on several nature topics. Activities included hiking, performing outdoor survivor skills, exploring ponds, learning first aid skills, touring the greenhouse, and creating art projects. The Kids ‘n Nature program is a partnership with Joliet Public Schools District 86, the Joliet Park District, and the University of Illinois Extension, Will County. ExxonMobil also provides financial support for the program.

“The program helps students understand the natural world they live in and the importance of learning and appreciating how nature and gardening affect their lives every day,” said University of Illinois Extension Center Horticulture Educator Nancy Kuhajda, “We focus on building leadership, teamwork, independent play, and resilience skills with the kids.”
