Washington Students Win Local Math Competition

The student math team from Washington Junior High School won first Place overall at the Joliet West High School Mu Alpha Theta Mid High Math Competition. In addition to Washington, six local junior high schools, including Dirksen, Gompers, and Hufford Junior High Schools competed in the contest. Students were judged in a variety of areas including geometry, truth tables, trigonometry, mental math, and circles. 

The seventh and eighth grade students on the winning Washington team included: Jesus Avila, Sophia Baltz, Kaelyn Bonner, Jamison Borello, Raeann Burzawa, Janelly Carbajal, Amya Casillas, Troy Cicero, Iyanna Daniels, Ana Franco, Andy Granados, Rafael Gutierrez, Kevin Guzman, Dalyssah Guzman-Calderon, Emma Hoffman, DaMiya Jackson, Angelina Juarez, Ashley Klaff, Jose Martinez, Zoe McNeal, Eduardo Mendez, Joshua Mendoza, Allison Moroney, Andy Moreno, Omar Ortiz, Jacob Pearson, Zach Riley, Julian Ruiz, Cheyenne Smith, and Jesus Zamudio.  The students were coached by Washington teachers Caris Duda and Joe Gaul.  

In addition to placing first place overall, the Washington students also came in first place in circles (seventh grade), group (seventh and eighth grades), and truth tables (eighth grade).  The eighth grade team from Gompers Junior High received first place in trigonometry and the eighth grade team from Hufford Junior High placed first place in mental math. 

The meet was held at Joliet West High School and sponsored by the high school math honor society Mu Alpha Theta.
